Deposits for tin cans as from 31 december 2022

In the Netherlands, we buy 2 billion canned drinks every year – and about 150 million of those cans end up in the natural environment. Deposits for small plastic bottles were already introduced in 2021, as a response to the increase in litter. Now, a deposit of at least 15 euro cents is to become mandatory for tin cans, regardless of the type of drink they contain.

This measure requires a special deposit scheme, just like the scheme for PET-bottle deposits. As in that scheme, manufacturers will be held responsible for setting it up and for the costs. With the introduction of these deposits, the Netherlands is following in the footsteps of countries like Germany, Finland, Norway and Denmark.
